Olakodiyan is the Malayalam name for the sailfish, a large saltwater fish known for its distinctive, sail-like dorsal fin and elongated, spear-shaped upper jaw. It is considered one of the fastest swimmers in the ocean.

- Appearance: The olakodiyan is dark blue on top, with brownish-blue sides and a silvery-white underbelly. Its most notable feature is its large dorsal fin, which resembles a ship’s sail.
- Speed: Sailfish can grow to a considerable size and are famous for being among the fastest fish in the sea.
- Meat and culinary use: The fish has very firm, hard meat. Because of its dense texture, it is not typically used for curries or grilling. Instead, it is popular for making pickles, dry fries, and roasts.
